I Love You - Don’t Forget to Say it Every Day

  • No Related Post

This morning when I logged in to my computer at the office, I saw an email from my sister in Seattle with the subject line “I love you.”

Like many siblings we (my three brothers, my sister and I) pass along words of wisdom, jokes, YouTube videos and what not, as a way of keeping in touch.  So as I sipped my fresh Starbucks Costa Rican Terrazzu and opened the email, I was prepared for more of the same.

That isn’t what I got.

Instead was a simple message from my sister to a small group of people.  She said:

32 people woke up yesterday and did not know yesterday would be their last day.  Life is short.  So I love you.  Let those you love know.  That is all.

Carli.

This isn’t the usual fare I serve up on this blog. This is typically where I rant about those things in life that make me angry or seem ridiculous. I can ramble about anything that makes my hair stand on end.  This simple email from my sister was so poignant that it made me stop and think about those who are important to me.  When was the last time I uttered those three monosyllabic words?

While I have grieved for the families who lost their children, and I realize there is no way my grief can compare to what they must be experiencing, her thought was like a fist in the solar plexus. It took the wind out of me for a few minutes.

So today I fired off a series of emails and made some phone calls. I’m taking my children out for a burger, then we are going to the skate park they’ve been begging me to take them to.

Life is too short. We know it. We often stick our fingers in our ears and make that sound like we can’t hear the incessant ticking of our life-clock, and as we get older it seems the sands of time are exiting their upper chamber at a rapidly increasing rate and we are powerless to stop it.

I love you.  There…that didn’t hurt now did it?
