USB Cables - Steer Clear of Best Buy and Circuit City, Your Local Overpriced Electronics Store

Last week I was in need of a 9 foot USB 2.0 cable for a printer that resides on the return of my desk. The standard 6′ cable just wasn’t long enough. So, while I was out on my lunch break I thought that I would zip on by the Best Buy and pick up a 9′/10′ USB cable - sounds simple enough, right? I finally located a wall of USB cables and when I looked at the prices, I literally laughed out loud in the company of perfect strangers and said, “you’ve got to be kidding me!” $40.00 for a 9′ 8″ USB 2.0 cable.

I immediately snatched up the box to read the fine print. Was I missing something? Was this USB cable blessed by the Dalai Lama? Was it dipped in liquid diamonds? The more I searched and searched to find something that would justify the price, the angrier I became. STOP…..Google Time! I decided to let Best Buy keep their precious USB cable and get back to the office. I know, I know - I should have known better, but I wanted to give the Best Buy the benefit of the doubt.

O.K. - fast forward. I got back to my desktop and googled USB cables and landed on Sewell Direct:

Got my USB 2.0 cable for $5.95 =w00t!

I am growing tired of the big electronics retailers charging premiums! I am slowly beginning to refuse to shop anywhere but online.

Does this irritate “the you know what” out of you? If so, please leave me a comment of your story or related find in regards to the gross premiums your local retailers are pushing upon the public. Bless those who have no idea!

Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii Yah!

HDMI cable at Future Shop: $100
HDMI cable at generic shop down the street (same quality): $8

It’s sad that these electronic stores have to make their money selling overpriced accessories for your electronics. When I need cables, I either go online or hit up Walmart.

I learn long ago. To check cords with Radio Stack first and a couple supplies online. If I have to go to a retailer. I being in the ad or listing as to the cost of the item that similar listed in the store. Half the time I get my price beat. Before you go to any retailer. Check the lsiting of the item online first. Print it out and go to the store. I once wanted and got a DVD player it was lsited $50 less on line. I print out the listing and brought into my local Best Buy. I had to go thru the service desk and it took some time (wasted so they figure I walk out). I said to the manager, your company list this as is online. Unless you want me to file a complain with BBB or the local county custmoer office. Give me this price as list by your company. That I won it and a $10 coupon on my next purchased Don’t walk away get it if you are in the right.

Try to find a replacement Cisco serial interface to RJ45 connector for managing older Cisco switches and firewalls. Can’t seem to order one from Cisco. And if you do find someone selling this type of cable the price is usually in the $150 range.

Now that is what I call a rip-off for a 4-foot 8 wire cable.

Gizmodo ran a battery of tests and found Monster cables are for the most part, completely unnecessary. see The Truth About Monster Cable - Grand Finale (Part III)
